Tomás Joaquin de la Cruz

Originally from Ventura California, I, Tomás, am the sole employee at TdSharp sharpening service.

I was born and raised in Ventura, CA where I happily spent the first 20 years of my life. From a very early age I had a strong attraction towards knives and other sharp things. I began collecting pocket knives and made it a point to keep them as sharp as I could physically get them. I dedicated many, many hours to mastering the craft of freehand whetstone sharpening, a skill that, at the time, I thought I'd only use for myself. At 16, I got my first job bagging groceries at the local grocery store. Somehow that after-school job turned into a 20 year career. At age 20, I finished junior college and chose to go to California State University Chico, where I earned my BS in Mechanical Engineering while maintaining my grocery job and somehow found time to start a life with my amazing wife, Amanda.

After I finished school, I returned to Ventura, where I continued working for the grocery store and ended up in the management program. During this time period, my wife became pregnant with our first child. Before the baby came, we packed our bags, and moved our little growing family to Newbury Park. In search of additional income, I explored a number of side hustles including Postmates(not for me), and online transcribing (unbelievably boring!). At some point during this time period the idea of sharpening professionally as a side hustle was introduced to me. I pondered the thought of turning my passion into a business for some time. The thought of making money sharpening seemed too good to be true, but I couldn't think of a good reason not to try. On 11/4/2023, I announced on NextDoor that I was open for business. Within an hour, I had my first customer. Since that day, I have slowly grown the business into something that I am truly proud of.

TdSharp is a passion, turned side hustle, turned dream, and with some hard work and a little luck, soon to be full-time endeavor. You can expect amazing results when you give your sharpening tasks to TdSharp because I have a true passion for getting cutting tools to perform at their absolute best. TdSharp, because dull knives suck!
